Adult Literacy

Mission:

Our mission is to assist adults who lack basic reading, writing, or English conversation / reading and writing skills.  Basic literacy skills will be provided to adults in the 0-8 range, including English as a Second Language.  Student’s level 9-12 who request help will receive a tutor.  Adult learners are matched with a trained tutor and work in a one-on-one teaching situation.  These services are free and confidential.  We also work to increase public awareness of illiteracy and to improve collaboration among providers of adult educational services.

Purpose:

Our purpose is to serve clients that wish to learn to read.  We assess and match adult learners with volunteer tutors.  We supply materials, training, and monitoring and support services.   Our students are ABE (Adult Basic Education) and ESL (English as a Second Language) individuals from Blair County, and parts of Cambria and Huntingdon Counties. 

Did you know?

Thousands of people in Blair County cannot read above an elementary level.  Many of our residents have English as a Second Language and cannot read English at all.  Volunteers are always needed to train to be tutors for adult learners in our program.  Training classes are held 3 – 4 times a year.  Anyone with a college degree is welcome to attend.  Our tutors work in all the eight county libraries, Community Education Center in Altoona, CareerLink and several other public buildings.

Do you know?

Someone you know may need help to read or write.  They may want help to study for the GED or to get a job.  We can help!  All information is kept confidential and tutors work at convenient times for students.  Math tutors are also available as well as PA Driver’s License and Citizenship Testing tutors.  There is no fee for our services.
