What's new at the Library?

The Altoona Area Public Library is going "green" on for the Keep Us Green and Growing Fair. The library is working this year to educate the community on how to reduce our carbon footprint. Along with area agencies, they will offer information on green initiatives and how to make our planet even better just by the little changes we can make in our every day lives.

Mike Rowley of the Blair County Conservation District will be speaking in a program called "Run Smart". The program will educate on how to save gas mileage. Penn State's Master Gardner's, The Blair County Conservation District, The Blair County Department of Solid Waste and Recycling, and The Blair County Extension Office will join the library at this fair.

The Altoona Area Public Library will be celebrating the environment all year with the "Keep Us Green and Growing" fund-raiser. If there are any questions or your agency would like to be involved, please call Jill Maurer at 946-0417 ext. 161. Details of all events can be found on our events calendar.

Altoona Library Blogs RSSAnnual Fundraiser

This year we need to raise $30,000 once again to balance the budget. We think it is a great idea to explore conservation and recycling methods that we can practice here at the Library and also share with all of you. This year in addition to our "Gold Card" for $120.00 or more, we will be offering a free reusable shopping bag with any $5.00 donation. If only 6,500 of our loyal patrons made that $5.00 donation we would reach our goal and help to lower their carbon foot print making our world a cleaner better place. Last year the Library served 105,166 patrons who borrowed 249,531 items while being open 3,243 hours for the year. The Library provided programming for patrons from 12 months old in the "Family Place Program" to 90 years old in the "Homebound Program" and everyone in between. We placed a special emphasis on teens this past year, buying additional materials and doing special programming for them. Unfortunately, the State has given us no increase for the third year in a row. Inflation makes it very difficult to continue to move forward under those circumstances but we are very lucky to have patrons and Friends who care enough about the library to reach deep in these economically challenging times to keep their Library green and growing.
