Altoona Area Public Library News for February 2012
* February is Library Lover’s Month at the Altoona Area Public Library. To show our appreciation, each time you check out materials throughout February you will receive a chance to Win a Basket of Appreciation from your Library. You may borrow 2 DVDs for $1.00 on Tuesday, February 14th Only (adult cards only).
* Everyone is invited to Read-Draw-Sign: a FREE special storytime book presentation and signing by author of The Mascot with the Ascot, Cory Geishauser. Join us on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 9:15 am or 10:30 a.m. in the Altoona Area Public Library Theatre. Enjoy Cory's antics as he reads his NEW book and tells about his experiences as STEAMER the Altoona Curve Mascot. He will demonstrate his cartooning skills.
* The Altoona Area Public Library presents Free Movie Matinees. Enjoy the FREE family film “Zookeeper” rated PG (for some rude and suggestive humor, and language) on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. in the Library Theatre. (Running time 102 minutes). On February 11, 2012. and on February 16, 2012 from 1:00-3:30 pm we will feature "The Help" rated PG
* Join us on Monday, February 6, 2012 at 6 p.m. in the Altoona Area Public Library Theatre for a free and informative seminar on Education Savings Options. We will discuss education funding options, how to design an effective college investing plan, and how to create a legacy of education. Parents and Grandparents are encouraged to participate in the workshop presented by D. Harris Kere, Financial Advisor for Merill Lynch.
* Don’t let February go by without Loving Your Heart. Come to the Altoona Area Public Library on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012.Join Barb Lutz to learn ways to prevent heart disease, cancer& stroke; improve your immune system, athletic and scholastic performance and more. We will meet in the theatre at 6 p.m. Heart healthy snacks served.
* Join the Altoona Area Public Library BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP on Monday, February 13, 2012 for an American classic by Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse Five. On March 12 we will discuss the novel by John Knowles, A Separate Peace. We invite you to meet new friends and share your opinion at 5:45 p.m. in the Alumni Room.
* Learn Digital Photo Editing at the Altoona Area Public Library on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 10 - 11:30 a.m. and 1 - 2:30 p.m. Class size is limited to 5. Registration is required. Please call Amy Horell at 946-0417 ext. 134.
* The Altoona Area Public Library will be CLOSED for PRESIDENT’S DAY on Saturday, February 18; Sunday, February 19 and Monday, February 20, 2012.
* Please join the Altoona Area Public Library in February as our free Children's Programs focus on Health Literacy. Future topics include, Financial Literacy, Basic Literacy, and Informational Literacy. For more information please call the Library at 946-0417 ext. 123.
Preschooler Connection:
* The Altoona Area Public Library is offering a special Story Time program for children ages 12 months to 24 months. Mother Goose on the Loose is an interactive program highlighting traditional nursery rhymes, songs, music, movement and rhythm. This program is designed as a one-on-one lap-sit program for the child and caregiver to enjoy together. Classes are held on Mondays at 9:15am or10:30am. Sessions will be held on February 27, March 5, 12 & 19, 2012. Registration will begin on February 6. Please call the Library at 946-0417 ext. 123 to sign up due to the nature of the program, space is limited to 14 children/caregivers in each class.
* Children ages 3-6 years old and their families are invited to enjoy stories, songs, rhymes and art activities during our Story Hour program. Story Hour is held on Tuesdays at 10:15am or 1:30pm.Sessions will be held on February 14, 21, 28, March 6, 13 & 20. Story Time is designed to incorporate and emphasize the Pennsylvania Learning Standards for Early Childhood as they apply to pre-kindergarten children. Registration will begin on February 6. Please call the library at 946-0417 ext.123to register.
* Calling all toddlers! The Altoona Area Public Library is enrolling children ages 2 to 3 years old for Toddler Time. Children and families will enjoy stories, movement, songs, and rhymes. Toddler Time is designed to incorporate and emphasize the Pennsylvania Learning Standards for Early Childhood as they apply to infants and toddlers. Classes are held on Wednesdays at 9:15 and on Thursdays at 9:15or 10:30. Wednesday classes will be held on February 15, 22, 29,March 7, 14 & 21. Thursday classes will be held on February 16, 23, March 1, 8, 15 & 22, 2012. Registration will begin on Feb. 6. Please call the library at 946-0417 ext.123 to register.
* The Altoona Area Public Library is partnering with LEARN to present a Pre-Kindergarten Transition Story Time with Miss Denise. All are welcome to attend on Friday. February 10, 2012at 10 a.m. in the Library’s Youth Room.
* Free LICC Pre-school Developmental Screening will be offered on Friday, February 24, 2012 at the Altoona Area Public Library. For more information and registration please call the Learning Express at 946-8465.
* The Altoona Area Public Library presents Erin's Story. Join us as Erin shares her experience as a 17 year old cancer survivor. She will present the program to the children for her Girl Scout Gold Award project to benefit Relay for Life on Monday, February 27, 2012 at 5:30pm in the theatre.
* Make it your goal this year to learn about health and nutrition. The Altoona Area Public Library will be offering a special story time program called “Food Fables for Your Table.” Children and parents will be able to learn about healthy eating habits as well as enjoy stories, rhymes, songs, food and special activities. This story time program will occur on Tuesday sat 10:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Sessions will be held on February 28, March 6, 13, and 20. Come out and enjoy the fun! * Dine out while benefiting your Altoona Area Public Library! Join us for special guests, stories and crafts at McLibrary Night on Thursday March 8, 2012 from 5-8 p.m. at the Station Medical Center McDonald’s!
* You are invited to An Artist's Chat at the Altoona Area Public Library on Thursday, March 15, 2012 in the Library Board room from 5 to 7 p.m. Meet the talented Artists of Art in Common. View some of their recent Work and learn their artistic points of view. Refreshments will be served.

* Mark your calendars for Altoona Area Public Library's Shamrock Basket Fundraiser, which will take place at 2 p.m. March 18 at Father Kelley Hall, 25th Ave.& 5th St., Altoona. The World Famous Longaberger ® Baskets will be featured. For patrons wishing to help make the prize baskets the best ever, donations of gift cards or new items are appreciated. For each donated item, the patron's name will be entered into a special drawing for a Longaberger ®gift basket on display at the Adult Circulation desk. Donations accepted until February 24. The drawing will be held March 19. Tickets for the Shamrock Basket Fundraiser are on sale now at both circulation desks.
