ScanPA Digitization Project

The Altoona Area Public Library has recently joined the ranks of other libraries that have uploaded digital collections to Power Library’s PA Photos and Documents which is an online digital repository for preserving our history. The first collection uploaded was selected as a test case to prepare for future public scanning sessions. The collection consists of one digitized book, Architecture: Practical and Theoretical by the Beezer brothers of Altoona, PA published in 1894.

We were alerted to the value of the book by a Seattle architectural historian who searched for the book on WorldCat and found the only known copy was located at our library in our Pennsylvania room. We decided that the book would be an excellent test case for the new ScanPA equipment, so we digitized the book. The book is now full text searchable and you can browse it yourself by clicking on the link below. The book contains several photos of historic Altoona houses created by the famous architects. We encourage you to explore the book and to check out the many other collections that are available from other libraries. Be on the lookout for many more collections to be uploaded in the future!
